The airport of Simferopol, which nowadays is being renovated, celebrated 80th anniversary in the end of January 2016. Becoming Russian, the airport has significantly increased traffic volume. At the end of last year Simferopol was inferior in passenger traffic to Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Pulkovo only. It might be considered as the unique case, because very stringent sanctions and prohibitions didn’t stop its work but pulled out of stagnation. The suspension of international and Ukrainian flights is completely compensated by the Russian destinations. In high season there are more than 50 flight destinations.
The airport is actively developed: the existing terminals were modernized and doubled last year. Otherwise it would be impossible and unsafe to serve 5 million passengers. This task was successfully completed as soon as possible. The terminal square is being reconstructing now and it will be ready before holiday season starts. There will be a large parking, including bus-parking area and parkomat. Public transport stops will be renovated and approach roads will be expanded. But the main surprise is awaited for may, when construction of the new main terminal “Crimean wave” will start.
“Crimean wave” from SAMSUNG
CEO of the Simferopol airport Eugene Plaksin has presented the plans or the construction of a new terminal last autumn. The idea was supported by the head of the Republic Sergey Aksyonov.
The new terminal will be built not with state funds, but with private investors’ money. The point at issue is about investments of about 20 billion rubles. The project of a new terminal with an area of 70 thousand square meters was engineered by SAMOO Architects & Engineers, a SAMSUNG division. As a comparison, the area of the terminal before the events of the “Crimean spring” was 11 thousand. The South Korean project was adopted to the Crimean conditions and Russian standards and rules by Moscow engineering company. Today the project is completed and its examination must be completed in March.
The project provides for serving up to seven million passengers a year
The airport’s management hopes that the project will be approved and construction starts this spring. In two years the terminal and its infrastructure, roads, hotels, business centers, parking, etc. should be constructed and take up tourists who arrive to Crimea in the summer of 2018. The project provides for serving up to seven million passengers a year.
Second air strip
A New terminal and additional facilities will occupy is a big area. The land parcel few days ago was formalized by the state register service. The tract of land, which is marked by a star in the picture (GoogleEarth) is located between two air strips. The old one is used now only as bearing track (blue arrow) and enother, which was constructed in 80-ies and operates today (red arrow). According the Federal Targeted programme, the old air strip will be and equipped with modern navigation equipment, lengthened and reconstructed for reception of all types of Russians aerial vehicle.
Therefore, the airport will have two air strips. This will simplify the work of air traffic control officers. By the way, air navigation services is also planning to build a new tower near the new terminal. The CEO is sure that the new terminal will be in demand. The future of the existing complex (in circle) will be known later. However, if Crimea will prove the ability to attract tourists, the old and new complexes will not stand idle. All possibilities exist. Priority is to get service in peninsula going.
