Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN died February 20. He died on the job post in New York. He died just one day before his 65th birthday. Abut activity of one of the brightest professionals of Russian diplomatic wrote the column Igor Ryabov, the head of the expert group “Crimean project”.
In this age, when the creators of incubators and psychological questionnaires become leaders, the diplomats of the old school, are like the last of the Mohicans. They are demigods living on the earth, descended from Olympus of sense, wisdom, talent, professionalism and serving to the country. They are diplomats, that know how to defend positions and achieve the result.

Vitaly Churkin served as Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Russia’s Representative to the Security Council from April, 8, 2006. Previously he was Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation
Vitaly Churkin was an example of such a diplomat. Many journalists in international relations saw him like this even when it was non-successful historical period for Russia. He was contactable, intelligent, cheerful, informative. He was the young educatee of the old Soviet school. Many a one saw him as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
When the Minister Andrey Kozyrev hold in check the NATO extension to the East the Russian diplomacy had only one impenetrable by any force front. It was the front of the arrangement of military conflict military conflict in Bosnia.
From 1992 to 1994, Churkin was a Special Representative of the President of Russia in the Balkans in the rank of Deputy Minister of foreign Affairs. His decisions and achievements have surprised the world. He was working remarkably successful these two years in comparison with other destinations. Visible successes of Russian diplomacy in the Balkans in times of economic crisis and the events of autumn 1993 were contrary to conditions. Peace in the Bosnian conflict was achieved only after the intrusion of Russia.
Permanent Representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin was awarded the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland” IV class
Then thank for efforts of Vitaly Churkin Russia has not left the Serbians at the mercy of the International tribunal, keeping for them victim status as for other parties to the conflict.
The war, that lasted almost a decade, was over. Not because of the ultimatum NATO, and because of the formula of division of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was accepted by the Serbians. The bombing of Belgrade was after that, but there were not any negotiations. There was just the hard pressure of one geopolitical player, who decided not to fight on the diplomatic field with such opponents as Churkin. By the way, that was brilliant victories of the Russian diplomacy in the Balkans Churkin was relegated to the background and was returned to the “big game” a little later, as Russia’s Representative to the UN.
After the Balkan conflict Churkin got the reputation die hard for the West. Diplomat who was appreciated by Henry Kissinger, could not to upset because of hysterics of Samantha Power, the symbol of unenlightenment of diplomacy in the modern world.
Followed the best examples of skillful public dispute Churkin created the impression of a man with nerves of steel. At first he was one versus all, and after – went undefeated.
Thanks largely to Churkin, Russia is gaining new allies, because it demonstrates power. Of course nerves are not of steel, and of course is death in the lines in the champ of battle.
The UN has lost not just the Russia’s Representative, it has lost a bright star in the political firmament. It will be almost impossible to replace him.
